Philips Hue Bridge Pro vs V2: Comparison & Upgrade (2025)

If you have Philips Hue equipment in your home, you might have noticed, there is 3 generations of the Philips Hue Bridge. It is actually quite easy to detect what version you have.

This post have been update in November 2025…

The primary unit in a Philips Hue setup is the Bridge. This is the device that all Hue devices connect to. The Philips Hue Bridge has been sold in 2 different generations. It is very easy to identify if you have the 1st or 2nd generation of Philips Hue Bridge. The V1 generation is round, the V2. generation is square shaped and the 2025 edition is all black.

1st generation bridge

Philips Hue Bridge v1

The 1st generation of the Philips Hue Bridge was released back in October 2012. It was a big success and was even named Best Product of 2012 by Forbes magazine. Philips was one of the first company to offer smart lighting products for home use.

2nd generation bridge

The Philips Hue Bridge 2nd generation was released in October 2015 in a new design. It supports all features of the 1st generation plus some new features. It was the first bridge to support Apple HomeKit and Apple’s Siri control. This is not possible with the 1st generation bridge. That is why you should make sure that you don’t buy the outdated generation 1 anymore.

Philips Hue Bridge Pro (v3)

The newest generation of Philips Hue Bridge, is called Bridge Pro. It was released in September 2025. Besides the obvious, that it is black and not white, is that it is a major upgrade since its predecessor that was released 10 years ago. It has been improved with new technology and has received a big boost when it comes to performance and capacity.
